BEAUHARNAIS HORTENSE DE: (1783-1837) Queen consort of Holland 1806-10 as the wife of Louis Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother. Hortense de Beauharnais was also the daughter of Napoleon's first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais, therefore making Hortense the Emperor's stepdaughter and sister-in-law. A.L.S., Hortense, one page, 8vo, Arenenberg, 26th August 1824, to [Antoine Claire] Thibaudeau, in French. Hortense states that she is pleased that her correspondent is happy and peaceful in Brussels and informs him that she will soon send him the copy of the letters he requires for his work, remarking 'dans ce moment j'ai chez moi la grande duchesse de Bade c'est m'en donner distraction a mes occupations sedentaires es surtout a ma profonde douleur, mais rien ne peut effacer l'impression que laisse une si grande perte, celle d'un frere cheri ne peut jamais se remplacer' (Translation: 'at this moment I have the Grand Duchess of Baden at home, it is to distract me from my sedentary occupations and above all from my deep pain, but nothing can erase the impression left by such a great loss, that of a dear brother can never be replaced') further sending thanks to Thibaudeau's wife for her letters and adding that she will send her some verses. With integral address leaf in Hortense's hand (neatly inlaid). VG Antoine Claire Thibaudeau (1765-1854) Comte Thibaudeau. French politician who, whilst in exile in Brussels and other cities, occupied himself with his Memoires sur la Convention et le Directoire which was published in two volumes in 1824. He would also write Histoire generale de Napoleon Bonaparte, published in six volumes from 1827-28. Eugene de Beauharnais (1781-1824) French nobleman, statesman and military commander who served during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. The stepson of Napoleon and sister of Hortense de Beauharnais, Eugene died in Munich on 21st February 1824 at the age of 42 having suffered two attacks of apoplexy the previous year. Stephanie de Beauharnais (1789-1860) French Princess and Grand Duchess consort of Baden, a second cousin of Hortense and Eugene de Beauharnais.
