A good unsigned 12 x 15 photograph of Joyce by Gisele Freund, the image depicting Joyce standing outdoors in a full-length pose on a Paris street, with a motor car at his side in 1938 (printed later). Signed ('Gisele Freund') in black ink by the photographer to the verso beneath her copyright stamp and further annotated by her in pencil, '1938 Joyce rend visite a son fils et sa famille' (Translation: '1938 Joyce visits his son and his family'). A couple of minor, light corner creases to the white borders and a small, insignificant scuff to the lower right corner of the white border, otherwise VG Gisele Freund (1908-2000) German-born French photographer, famous for her portraits of writers and artists. In 1938 Joyce, who famously disliked being photographed, allowed Freund to take his portrait and over a period of three days she was able to capture some of the most intimate portraits of the writer during his time in Paris. The photographs were later published in James Joyce in Paris: His Final Years (1965).
