BETJEMAN JOHN: (1906-1984) English Poet Laureate 1972-84. T.L.S., J. Betjeman (twice; for no apparent reason), one page, oblong 8vo, Cloth Fair, London, 6th March 1963, to Mrs. Tudge. Betjeman returns a charming photograph of Stokesay (no longer present) and thanks his correspondent for their letter, commenting 'I know the castle and church, for I once made a film of them for commercial television. I am shocked to hear of a factory being put down alongside the castle and am asking Sir Philip Magnus, who lives near, to make enquiries'. Some light creasing and a few minor spots of foxing, otherwise VG Stokesay Castle, one of the finest surviving fortified manor houses in England, is located in Shropshire. The British biographer Sir Philip Magnus (1906-1988) and his wife, Jewell Magnus-Allcroft owned and ran the castle privately before finally agreeing, in 1986, to place the property into the guardianship of English Heritage. The castle was left to the organisation on Jewell's death in 1992.
