MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. Small group of one A.L.S. and two T.Ls.S., Montgomery of Alamein, three pages (total), 4to, various places (New York, Paris), February - September 1953, all to Paul Loosli, the president of the Gstaad Ski Club and director of tourism in Gstaad, on various printed stationery including that of the Deputy Supreme Commander, Allied Powers Europe. Montgomery writes largely concerning his travel and accommodation arrangements for Switzerland, in part, 'I am so very sorry I got ill at Gstaad and could not attend the Ski Jumping or the Giant Slalom. I must do better next time. I have been looking into my dates for next year, 1954. I believe the weather is better in the second half of February and I am planning to visit Switzerland two weeks later next year' (18 February 1953), 'I note that the Ski Jumping Competition will be on Sunday 14 Feb. That will suit me and I will adjust my plans accordingly…..I must now spend more time in Gstaad than I have in the past and I will begin that custom in 1954' (12th April 1953), 'I have now finally settled the programme for my visit to Switzerland next year…..I enclose you a copy of the programme (still present). As you will see I am going to Garmisch in March for the Arlberg/Kandahar Ski Races' (9th September 1953). Each of the letters are accompanied by their original envelopes, hand addressed by Montgomery. Together with three unsigned carbon typed retained copies of Lossli's replies to Montgomery.
