Juliette Bessand was Jules Massenet´s daughter. Maupassant is sorry to realize that he has caused such sorrow, and states ` Je suis tout à fait confus de vous avoir donné tant de peine. Je pensais que vous enverriez tout simplement ma petite carte à votre frère, et je savais qu'en la faisant passer par vous, ma demande avait le plus sûr des avocats…´ (Translation: ` I am completely confused to have given you so much trouble. I thought you would just send my little card to your brother, and I knew that by passing it through you, my request had the safest of the advocates…´) Very small trace of tape to the upper left edge.
