LAURENCIN MARIE: (1883-1956) French painter, an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde as a member of the Cubists associated with the Section d'Or. A.L.S., Marie, three pages, small 8vo, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (23rd April 1952), to Jean Denoel, in French. Laurencin commences her letter by discussing an apartment at Rue Crillon, stating 'Il parait que la proprietaire a tellement envie d'un celibataire qu'elle vous le ferait a votre prix. Elle ne veut pas d'un menage d'enfants futurs ni presents' (Translation: 'It seems that the owner wants a bachelor so badly that she would do it for you at your price. She does not want a household of future or present children') and continues to write of various recent events and individuals, in part, 'Hier le relieur a rapporte cinq volumes de Marcel J. et j'en ai encore donne un........J'ai bien envie d'acheter le livre de Misia. Elle m'a habillee tant de fois pour aller au bal a Florence' (Translation: 'Yesterday the bookbinder brought back five volumes of Marcel J. and I gave away one more…….I really want to buy Misia's book. She dressed me so many times to go to the ball in Florence'). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Laurencin and signed ('M. Laurencin') by her in the return address to the verso. VG

Jean Denoel was an influential employee of the French publishing house Editions Gallimard.

Laurencin may refer to Misia Sert (1872-1950) Russian-born French patron of contemporary artists and musicians, known for the salons that she hosted over several decades at her homes in Paris.
