MARVIN LEE: (1924-1987) American actor, Academy Award winner. D.S., Lee Marvin, one page, 4to, n.p. (Los Angeles, California), n.d. (February 1980), on the printed stationery of The American Film Institute. The document takes the form of a letter addressed to Marvin by Howell Begle of the AFI and concerns the James Stewart Life Achievement Award and states, in part, 'On February 28, 1980, The American Film Institute will honor James Stewart with its eighth annual Life Achievement Award. The award will be presented at a dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to be attended by nearly two thousand members of the film community……The Institute's presentation to Mr. Stewart will include a screening of selected clips from his more important films. Among the films to be included in this screening is “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. All required consents for the use of clips from this film are being obtained from Screen Actors Guild. Your cooperation would also be appreciated by consenting to AFI's use of clips in which you appear…..' Signed by Marvin in blue ink at the foot of the document, granting his consent. VG

The Western film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) was directed by John Ford and starred James Stewart and John Wayne, in their first film together, and the supporting cast included Lee Marvin (as Liberty Valance).
