TOLAND GREGG: (1904-1948) - TOLAND GREGG: (1904-1948) American cinematographer, Academy Award winner. Toland worked on a number of classic Hollywood movies including The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Citizen Kane (1941), The Outlaw (1943) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). D.S., Gregg Toland , two pages, 4to, Los Angeles, California, 6 th March 1935, on the printed stationery of Samuel Goldwyn Inc. Ltd. The typescript document takes the form of a letter addressed to Toland from Abraham Lehr and confirms an agreement between the two parties, stating, in part, 'This agreement shall be interpreted in accordance with that certain agreement known and designated as “Cameraman's Agreement”…..between “American Society of Cinematographers Inc” and the “producers”. We hereby employ you to render your sole and exclusive services for us…..upon the same terms and conditions as are set forth in paragraphs 1 to 15, both inclusive, of that certain agreement between us dated October 11, 1928…..On condition that you fully and completely keep, perform and observe each and every term, covenant and condition of this agreement…..we agree to pay you….at the rate of Three Hundred Fifty Dollars ($350.00) per week until the equivalent of fifty-two (52) weeks compensation at that rate has been paid to you, and thereafter at the rate of Four Hundred Dollars ($400) per week….' Signed by Abraham Lehr (1880-1952) in his capacity as Vice President of Samuel Goldwyn Inc. Ltd, and countersigned by Toland indicating his approval and acceptance of the agreement. Also signed by both Toland and Lehr with their initials to the head of the first page, acknowledging a change in the date. Autographs of Toland are scarce as a result of his untimely death at the age of 44. Four file holes to the upper edge of each page, not affecting the text or signatures. VG
