LORRE PETER: (1904-1964) - LORRE PETER: (1904-1964) Hungarian-American actor who starred in Casablanca (1942). D.S., Peter Lorre , two pages, 4to, Beverly Hills, California, 22 nd December 1938, on the printed stationery of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. The typescript document takes the form of a letter addressed to the advertising agency Ruthrauff & Ryan Inc. from William Goetz in which Twentieth Century-Fox agree to Peter Lorre's engagement to perform on the Al Jolson Lifebuoy radio programme to be broadcast from a studio in Hollywood, California, on 27 th December 1938, and stating, in part, 'It is understood and agreed that you or your sponsor shall be permitted to use the name of the artist and his photographs in any manner or means that you may deem commensurate with the dignity of the artist, in connection with the advertising of the aforesaid broadcast…..provided, however, that your use of the same as aforesaid shall not in any way be an endorsement of the products of your sponsor…..It is understood and agreed that you are to pay as full compensation for the artist's services rendered hereunder the sum of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1500)……It is understood and agreed that in connection with both the broadcast and rebroadcast aforesaid, you will cause the following announcement to be made during the course thereof: “Peter Lorre, who has just completed his motion picture 'Mr. Moto in Puerto Rico' appears through the courtesy of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation”.' Signed by the American film producer and studio executive William Goetz (1903-1969) at the conclusion in his capacity as Vice President of Twentieth Century-Fox and countersigned by Lorre and a representative of Ruthrauff & Ryan Inc. indicating their approval and acceptance of the agreement. A couple of very minor staple holes to the upper left corner of each page, otherwise VG   Al Jolson's comedy and musical variety radio programme The Lifebuoy Show was broadcast on Tuesday evenings from 1936-39 and featured many guest stars as well as regular appearances from Martha Raye. The show was sponsored by Lifebuoy Soap who engaged the services of the Ruthrauff & Ryan advertising agency. Ruthrauff and Ryan coined the term 'B.O.' for its Lifebuoy ads to solve the problem of readers being offended by the term 'body odour'.   A modern compact disc recording of Peter Lorre's guest appearance on The Lifebuoy Show on 27 th December 1938 is included in the present lot.
