BARRAS PAUL: (1755-1829) - BARRAS PAUL: (1755-1829) French politician of the French Revolution, the main executive leader of the Directory regime of 1795-99. An intimate friend of Josephine de Beauharnais, Barras helped to facilitate the marriage between her and Napoleon Bonaparte. A.L.S., P. Barras (twice), one page (with a brief postscript of three lines to the second page), Paris, 22 nd June 1793, to Andre Real, in French. Barras states that his correspondent must have received several letters by now and continues 'je comptais partir demain me voila encore retarde par la presentation de l'acte constitutionnel demain' (Translation: 'I intended to leave here tomorrow, I am again delayed by the presentation of the constitutional act tomorrow' ), further adding that tomorrow miscellaneous papers will be sent to pay for the purchases made by the naval provisions agent at Ostende and that the obstructed routes for wheat to reach Paris must be removed by all possible means. With integral address leaf in Barras's hand (small area of paper loss caused by the original breaking of the seal). Some light age wear and a neat split to the edge of a fold to the integral leaf, otherwise VG Andre Real (1755-1832) French politician.
