Bailly served as mayor of the city of Paris from 1789 to 1791. An excellent letter to the famous writer St. Pierre, written only two months after the Storm of the Bastille, stating ` J´ai reçu avec reconnaissance Monsieur l´exemplaire que vous avez bien voulu me faire parvenir. Vous ne devez pas douter de mon empressement à lire un ouvrage sorti de vos mains. Les voeux d´un solitaire aussi estimable ne peuvent tendre qu´au bonheur public, et je regarderai mes loisirs comme tr`s bien employés en les consacrant à cette agréable occupation´ (Translation: “ I received with gratitude Sir the copy that you were kind enough to send me.
