LAFONTAINE CHARLES: (1803-1892) - LAFONTAINE CHARLES: (1803-1892) French mesmerist, or 'traveling public magnetic demonstrator' who had 'an interest in animal magnetism as an agent for curing or alleviating illnesses'. A.L.S., Lafontaine , one page, 8vo, Pall Mall East, London, 10 th August 1841, to a gentleman, in French. Lafontaine states that he has received his correspondent's letter 'qui m'apprend, le desir, que vous avez de faire magnetiser votre fils sourd-muet il est agé de 8 ans ½' (Translation: 'which teaches me, the desire, which you have to have your deaf-mute son magnetized, he is 8 ½ years old' ) and continues to add that it is a favourable age and if he would like to come to Lafontaine's home tomorrow at 2 o'clock then 'j'examinerai s'il peut etre magnetise' (Translation: 'I will examine if he can be magnetised' ).
