PLAYFAIR WILLIAM: (1759-1823) Scottish engineer and political economist, the founder of graphical methods of statistics who invented several types of diagrams including the line, area and bar chart of economic data in 1786 and the pie chart in 1801. Playfair also worked as a secret agent for Great Britain, reporting on the French Revolution and organising a clandestine counterfeiting operation in 1793 to collapse the French currency.
