POWELL C. F.: (1903-1969) British physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1950. A.Q.S., C. F. Powell, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (September 1948). Powell's quotation is written beneath the ink title Maxims of life of the great scientists of the whole world in the hand of a researcher at the head of the page, the physicist stating, in full, 'No man is an island, entire of himself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the maine'. Immediately beneath Powell's quotation appears an A.Q.S., Eric K Rideal by Eric Rideal (1890-1974) English physical chemist. Rideal writes, in full, 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and a good understanding have all those that are true of heart'. Dated 21st May 1948 in his hand. About VG
Powell's quotation is a famous line taken from John Donne's prose work Devotions upon Emergent Occasions (1624) and Rideal's biblical quotation derives from Psalms 111:10.
