YEATS W. B.: (1865-1939)
‘….it is the last I shall ever write’
YEATS W. B.: (1865-1939) Irish poet, dramatist & writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1923. A good T.L.S., W B Yeats, one page, 4to, Riversdale, Willbrook, Rathfarnham, Dublin, 21st May 1933, to [Derek] Verschoyle. Yeats writes, in full, 'I send you that review and it is the last I shall ever write. I haven't that gift, my writings have to germinate out of each other. I spent about ten days on the thing and its not worth the trouble. It is something else altogether dressed out to look like a review'. One small, neat tear to the right edge of the central fold, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
Derek Verschoyle (1911-1973) English publisher and literary editor of The Spectator from 1932-39.
