COWDEN CLARKE MARY: (1809-1898) English author who compiled a concordance to Shakespeare which was published between 1844-45. A.L.S., Mary Cowden Clarke, two pages, 8vo, Villa Novello, Genoa, 14th April 1864, to Miss. Tebbs. Cowden Clarke thanks her correspondent for their thought in sending the photographs of Reverend Latrobe, commenting 'My only regret is that you should have deprived yourself of so interesting a record of a celebrated & excellent man, in order to present it to me. But from what I see of the expression of your countenance, I think I can read proof that a sweet unselfishness and desire to please others form part of your character', adding that her husband remembers Mr. Latrobe and concluding 'Fancying that you may like to have them as reminiscences of friends at Genoa, I enclose you Mr. Cowden Clarke's & my own likenesses' (no longer present). With blank integral leaf. Together with a second A.L.S., Mary Cowden Clarke, two pages, small 8vo, Villa Novello, 18th February 1867, to Annetta Frascheri. Cowden Clarke writes to recommend 'an excellent house for Genoa lace' opposite the Palazzo Ducali, although also explains 'the shop a little further down the street of Carlo Alberto has, perhaps, the larger choice. I paid Sigra. Reborati 200 fs for a very handsome blk lace shawl-cloak, but then it was made expressly for me, from my own chosen design; & perhaps you might get one ready-made for a smaller price'. With integral address leaf. VG, 2
