CHAR RENE: (1907-1988) French poet and a member of the French Resistance during World War II. A.L.S., Rene Char, to two sides of a plain correspondence card, n.p. (Paris), 2nd March 1950, to Rene Micha ('Mon cher ami'), in French. Char writes, in part, 'Personnellement je serais tres heureux de vous voir dans Empedocle des poemes de Jouve pour lequel j'ai un tres grande estime, poemes accompagnes d'une etude de vous……Je ne m'occupe plus de la revue mais la qualite de Jouve, votre qualite seront certainement bien accueillies' (Translation: 'Personally, I would be very happy to see you in Empedocle of the poems of Jouve for which I have a very great regard, poems accompanied by a study of you…..I no longer take care of the magazine but the quality of Jouve, your quality will certainly be well received'). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Char and signed ('Rene Char') by him in the return address panel ('L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, Vaucluse') to the verso. VG
Rene Micha (1913-1992) Belgian poet, art & literature critic, film enthusiast and writer.
Pierre Jean Jouve (1887-1976) French writer, novelist & poet who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature on five occasions and was one of the chief poets of the French Resistance.
The review Empedocle was published between 1949-50 and edited by Albert Camus, Rene Char and others. Rene Micha was chosen by the Seghers collection to study the poet Jouve and his work for the publication Poetes d'aujourd'hui and Micha met with Jouve in the 1940s when they spent a few weeks together. The work was published in 1956.
