BALZAC HONORÉ DE: (1799-1850) French Novelist and Playwright. Best known for his masterwork novel La Comedie Humaine, a multi-novel collection of novels written over twenty years. Scarce A.L.S., `De Bc´, one page, 8vo, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [31st August 1848], to Hippolyte Souverain, in French. Balzac sends the present letter related to business matters and to his North Railways shares, to his correspondent and his editor Souverain. Balzac states in part `Je ne puis pas augmenter le nombre de mes actions, vous me parlez de 30 et je n´en ai que 15. Venez Samedi a 8h. du matin car il faudrait pouvoir partir pour 10h ½ pour aller voir la campagne, et terminions cette affaire avant de partir…´ (Translation: “I cannot increase the number of my shares, you speak to me of 30 and I only have 15. Come Saturday at 8h in the morning because we would have to be able to leave for 10.30 a.m. to go to the countryside, so let's finish this business before leaving…“) He further asks Souverain to give him a loan of six thousand francs which he will return, saying `Cette affaire est de la derniere simplicité si me prêtez …. 6000 francs que je vous remborserez par un effet fin avril, garanti par 15 actions du Nord…´ (Translation: “This business is of the last simplicity if you lend me…. 6000 francs that I will reimburse to you by a bill ox exchange at the end of April, guaranteed by 15 shares of the North…”) With address leaf bearing a postmark, addressed in Balzac´s hand.
