MALIBRAN MARIA: (1808-1836) Spanish Mezzo-Soprano. One of the most best-known opera singers of the 19th century for her dramatic performances and her extraordinary voice. She became a legendary figure after her very early death. Rare A.L.S., `M. F. Malibran´, one page, oblong 8vo, Brussels, n.d., to her impresario Jules Troupenas, in French. The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal of « Bath ». Malibran enquires as to why her correspondent did not reply to her letter `Vous n´avez pas répondu à ma lettre. Pouquoi ?´ (`You have not answered to my letter. Why ?´), and continues to add that she has received notification from the postal services in Paris that there is a letter waiting for her from Milan and that there is a charge of 7 francs and 60 cents to pay, and a further 4 francs and 60 cents to have it sent to her. In concluding the singer asks Troupenas `Voulez-vous payer pour moi le tout et me l´envoyer? Je vous serai bien obligée´ (`Would you please pay the whole and send it to me ? I would be most obliged´) . Autographs of Malibran are particularly rare following her untimely death at the age of 28. G to VG
