GUS: (1911-1997) Gustave Erlich. French comic Cartoonist. Well remembered for his publications in French newspapers Le Figaro, Le Canard Enchainé, and many others. An excellent signed original watercolour, `Gus´, one page, oblong folio, drawing paper, n.p., dated 11th April 1984 in his hand, in French. Gus has drawn a funny sketch showing Russian General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1984, Konstantin Chernenko, wearing a crown with jewels coronated by the hammer and sickle symbol of communism, on the occasion of his appointment as leader of the Soviet Union. Chernenko was elected in April 1984 Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. VG
Konstantin Chernenko (1911-1985) Soviet Politician. After the death of Brezhnev and his successor Andropov, Chernenko was appointed the successor as the seventh General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from February 1984 until his death in March 1985, and was made Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in April 1984. Chernenko died after leading the country only 13 months, and was succeeded by Mikhail Gorbachev.
