TCHAIKOVSKY PIOTR ILLICH: (1840-1893)

`I am just sending you the corrections, 1) of the Concerto in B minor...´

TCHAIKOVSKY PIOTR ILLICH: (1840-1893) Russian Composer. A very fine A.L.S., `P. Tschaikovsky´, one page, 8vo, Paris, 8th April 1889, to Franz Schaffer, in German. Tchaikovsky refers to his masterpiece Piano Concerto nº 1 in B.b minor, opus 23, and explains to his correspondent the corrections required and the mistakes he has found in his Piano Concerto score, stating `Soeben schicke ich zu Ihnen die Correcturen 1) vom Concert B-moll 2) von der Partitur des Quartetts op. 11 Leider habe ich nicht die Zeit gehabt die 3 letzten Sätze von op. 11 durchzusehen. Bitte lassen Sie die Revision von einem guten Musiker machen. Im Concert habe ich viel Fehler gefunden `I am just sending you the corrections, 1) of the Concerto in B minor, 2) of the Score of the Quartet op.11. Unfortunately I didn't have time to look through the last 3 musical movements of op. 11. Please get a good musician to do the revision. I found a lot of mistakes in the concert´ Tchaikovsky had done his second and last revision of his piano concerto few months earlier. To the upper left corner, as a post-scriptum, Tchaikovsky annotates `I have to go to London, then 3 days to Tbilisi in the Caucasus´ With blank integral leaf. VG

Schaffer was in charge of the corrections at Daniel Rather musical editors. Daniel Rather published Tchaikovsky´s Piano Concerto nº 1, but never published the quartet referred to in the present letter.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1874-75 and is among the best known of all piano concertos. It was first revised in the summer of 1879 and again in December 1888. This last revision is the one Tchaikovsky refers to in the present letter.
