VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901)

‘…in the somnambulism scene you will have the cadenza done in the following way…’

VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. An exceptionally important autograph letter with two autograph musical quotations only two days before the premiere of his opera Macbeth (1847). A.L.S. with A.M.Qs., `G. Verdi´, one page, 8vo, Florence, 12th March 1847, to Giovanni Ricordi, Milan, in Italian. An extremely interesting content letter, where Verdi sends two important corrections to his editor Ricordi, regarding his opera Macbeth (1847). Verdi, referring to the fifth scene of the first act of the opera states `Ti prego di fare il seguente cambiamento nella quarta Battuta dell´ adagio della cavatina di Lady nella sola parte cantabile´ ("Please make the following change in the fourth bar of Lady´s cavatina adagio in the cantabile part only") Verdi carefully pens beneath his request a two bars musical quotation, adding beneath the singing text `ti vo´ quell fred-do´. Further again Verdi explains which one is the second correction, to the fourth scene of the third act, saying `Anche nella scena de sonambulismo farai fare la cadenza nel modo seguente´ ("Also in the somnambulism scene you will have the cadenza done in the following way") and again adds beneath a very clean musical quotation with the singing text beneath `Andiam andiam…andiam andiam Macbetto andia…´ Alongside Verdi´s musical quotations Ricordi annotated the sheets pages where the corrections had to be inserted and the name of the engraver "Briorli". The two corrections were included to the pages 41 and 240 in the Ricordi´s first edition piano-singing. Addressed to the verso in Puccini´s hand, and postmarked in Florence. Very small repair to the inside fold. Small overall minor age wear with left edge very slightly trimmed. G
