TRUFFAUT FRANÇOIS: (1932-1984) French film Director. One of the main figures of the French New Wave and an icon of the French film industry. An excellent and attractive T.L.S., `François´, one page, 4to, Paris, 13th October 1978, on his personal printed stationery bearing his printed full name to the heading, to Alex Joffé, in French. At the time of the present letter Truffaut is about to complete the edition of his film L´Amour en Fuite (1979) (`Love on the Run´) Truffaut apologizes for his late reply `... tu sais ce que sont les quatre dernières semaines d´un montage, quand on se prend à souhaiter qu´un incendie au laboratoire détruise le négatif !´(`…you know what the last four weeks of editing a film are like, when you find yourself wishing that a fire in the laboratory would destroy the negative !´), and responds to his correspondent´s wish of having the French director accepting an actor role in his film project, stating in part `...réellement, je ne désire plus faire l´acteur et mon plan de travail pour l´année prochaine est déjà établi´ (`..really, I no longer want to do an actor´s role and my work plan for next year is already established´) Truffaut further recommends four actors´ names `…peuvent me remplacer avantageusement sur l´écran, ma préférence allant à une version nettement rajeunie..´ (`… they can replace me advantageously on the screen, my preference going to a clearly rejuvenated version..´) VG
