CRAWFORD JOAN: (1905-1977) American actress, Academy Award winner. Series of eight T.Ls.S., Joan, (one also signed on behalf of her adopted daughters, Cindy and Cathy), nine pages (total), 8vo and 4to, New York and Los Angeles, December 1959 - December 1974, to Mr and Mrs Julien Savignac, some on colour printed stationery offering Season's Greetings. Crawford writes a series of social letters to her friends, in part, 'How wonderful you were to me while I was in Montreal, and I am so grateful for your many kindnesses to me…..Bless you, and I do hope you will let me know when you are coming to New York. Please send me your home address' (8th December 1959; also supplying her own home address at 2 East 70th Street in New York and telephone numbers), 'I adored your letter of September tenth. I'm so sorry you weren't in New York with Julien. I would have so loved to see you again. I am so glad that he likes Cathy and Cindy. They are divine angels…..You are a living doll to write a "by hand" letter. I think you were really fortunate, in a way, to stay at a motel rather than at the Chateau Frontenac. With all the goings-on, and all the parties, you probably got more rest than anyone else. Yes, darling, I do know about all the excitement and preparations for all the luncheons, dinners, cocktail parties, etc. It can be quite a grind…..I am leaving tomorrow morning for Salt Lake City, on a business trip for Pepsi-Cola. I will be back on Friday night, in Los Angeles, as I am going to appear on Bob Hope's first television show of the fall season' (20th September 1960), 'How wonderful it was to see both of you again. I'm sad we didn't have more time to visit or to see each other under less hectic circumstances, but then, that's what conventions are for; and it was very, very successful, I hope' (11th December 1962), 'As the Holiday Season approaches, I realize how grateful I am to you for your friendship. May you enjoy all the happiness of Christmas, and may God's blessings be with you and your loved ones in the New Year' (Christmas 1966), 'The Christmas Season is a special time to wish you peace, love and joy….With the economy and the world situation as they are; next Christmas and thereafter, the time and energy I spend greeting each of you will be devoted instead to the charities which are so important to the less fortunate people, especially children, of the world. This, I believe, is in keeping with the truer meaning of Christmas' (Christmas 1974). Four of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes. VG, 8
