PENG LI: (1928-2019) Chinese Politician, Premier of the People´s Republic of China 1987-98. After Deng Xiaoping became China's leader in the late 1970s, Li took increasingly powerful political positions, until he became premier in 1987. As Premier, Li was the most visible representative of China´s government who backed the use of force to quell the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. During the protests Li declared martial law and, in cooperation with Xiaoping, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, ordered the June 1989 military crackdown against student pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. Signed 4 x 6 colour photograph by Peng, in Chinese, the bold black ink signature has been matted in black, 3 x 2.5, beneath a 6 x 5 colour photograph, unsigned, showing the Chinese leader in a head and shoulders pose during a speech, to an overall of 8 x 12 (20 cm x 30 cm). Easily removable. Also dated below the signature, 30th June 1994, in Peng´s hand. The matted signature being to the lower white border of a 4 x 6 photograph, hidden by the mate, showing Li Peng standing, alongside British Prime Minister John Major, exchanging diplomatic presents.
