BROOKE JAMES: (1803-1868) British soldier and adventurer who founded the Raj of Sarawak in Borneo and ruled as the first White Rajah of Sarawak 1841-68. A.L.S., J Brooke, three pages, 8vo, Burrator, Horrabridge (Devon), 21st May 1864, to J. A. Smith. Brooke states that he has been expecting his correspondent and therefore not written before, adding however 'We are all disappointed this morning by the news of your detention' and continuing 'The ladies drove over to breakfast & will pass the day here quietly as Mrs. Brown is not strong'. Brooke further writes 'The enclosed (no longer present) will tell you that our trouble about the steamer arose from Farquhars not recollecting the contents of Mr. Harvey's letters. I have no doubt it is building at Bangkok & that the engine, & guns, are to be sent out. It is well over' and concludes his letter 'Burrator never affords much news but I wish I could have welcomed you here, just to shew you how retired & wild a spot may be found in England'. Some heavy traces of former mounting to the verso of the final page and a few creases, otherwise about VG
