LUXEMBURG ROSA: (1871-1919) Polish-German Revolutionary, a Marxist Philosopher and anti-war Activist. Luxemburg was summarily executed by the SPD Freikorps when they crushed the revolt known as the Spartacist uprising. An idolized and controversial historical figure in Poland and Germany. Rare and very interesting content A.L.S., `Rosa Luxemburg´, three pages, 4to, Berlin, 28<sup>th</sup> November 1904, to comrade André Morizet, in French. Luxemburg states in part `C´était en effet une semaine tres agréable que nous avons passée ensemble a Amsterdam. Je trouve la photographie excellente, on admire ici votre habileté. Further Luxemburg says `Si vous voulez bien satisfaire ces solliciteurs, la reconnaissance de quatre pays - Allemagne, Pologne, Autriche et Hollande - vous est sure éternellement´ ("If you want to satisfy these petitioners, the recognition of four countries - Germany, Poland, Austria and Holland - is secured for you and forever") Before concluding Luxemburg refers to Bebel saying `Je regrette encore d´avantage que Bebel s´est laisse faire par la "Vie" juvenile de Longuet & Co. Espérons que l´illusion ne durera trop longtemps. Bebel ne connait malheureusement pas les personnes du mouvement français - sauf les vieux chefs..´ ("I regret even more that Bebel let himself be carried away by the youthful "Vie" ("Life") of Longuet & Co. Let's hope that the illusion will not last too long. Bebel unfortunately does not know the people of the French movement - except the old leaders..") Karl Kautsky (1854-1938) Czech-Austrian Philosopher and Marxist Theorist. Kautsky founded the socialist journal Neue Zeit. Following the war, Kautsky was an outspoken critic of the Bolshevik Revolution, engaging in polemics with Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin.

 

Ferdinand August Bebel (1840-1913) German socialist Politician and Writer. Best remembered as one of the founders of the Social Democratic Workers´s Party of Germany (SDAP) which merged together with the Worker´s Association into the Socialist Worker´s Party of Germany (SAPD). He served until his death as chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
