PIERCE FRANKLIN: (1804-1869) American President 1853-57. A highly attractive D.S., `Franklin Pierce´, as president, one page, 15 x 18 large vellum folio, Washington, 24th July 1856, to William Givin. The partially printed document bears two large and very attractive printed drawings, at the head showing an eagle with vessels on the sea to the background, and at the base of the document bearing an unusually large image showing Poseidon, his horses, and other personages on the sea. Entitled ''Franklin Pierce, President of the United States of America , to all who shall see the present'', the title appoints William Givin Lieutenant in the Navy and is countersigned by the Secretary of the Navy J.C. Dobbin. Also bearing at the base a large US Navy department orange paper seal in very fine condition. A bold black ink good example in full signature. EX £1000-1500 James Cochran Dobbin (1814-1857) Secretary of the Navy 1853-57. A ship present at the attack of Pearl Harbor on 7th December 1941, was named in his honour.
