GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) - GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) Brazilian Composer. Largely considered the first New World composer having his work accepted in Europe. An excellent original score book, the large 10.5 x 13.5 hardback edition (light covers) being the printed musical score of his opera Fosca (1872), published by F. Lucca, Milan, 1873. Signed and inscribed by Gomes to the title page `To His Excellency Francisco Xavier da Costa Aguiar D´Andrada, Minister of Brazil appointed to the Chile Republic…A. Carlos Gomes´, in Portuguese, also dated `Milano, 5th March 1873´ in his hand. To the title page and beneath the composer´s name, the printed text in Italian states ''Expressly written for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and performed on 16th February 1873''. The 352 pages book, with libretto in Italian, is very attractively bounded in red leather with gilt embossed flourish. Small overall, minor age wear, with foxing stain to the inside pages, otherwise G £500-800 Fosca (1872) is an Opera in four acts by Gomes, with libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, based on Luigi Capranica´s novel La Festa delle Marie (1869). The Opera premier took place at La Scala in Milan, on 16th February 1873. Francisco Xavier da Costa Aguiar D´Andrada (1822-1892) Brazilian Diplomat. Accompanied by an A.L.S., lightly affixed to the front free endpaper, signed by a member of the Andrada family, dated in Santiago, July 1922, in Portuguese, and offering the score to her correspondent as a present and explaining its importance and the way it was offered to them by the Brazilian composer.
