HERSCHEL JOHN: (1792-1871) English Astronomer, Inventor and Chemist. Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy. He also made important contributions to the science of photography. Signed 2.5 x 4 sepia cabinet card `J.F.W. Herschel´, the Maull & Polyblank image, Picadilly photographers from London, showing the English polymath seated in a three quarter length pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower white border, also showing the printed photographer´s name. Bearing to the verso of the cabinet card the printed photographer´s logo and address.
