Woolf commences her letter by remarking that she remembers well meeting her correspondent last winter, continuing 'And now I must thank you for your very generous &, what is better, highly intelligent study of Mrs. Dalloway' , further remarking 'I am very grateful to you for the care & skill which you have spent on my work - it seems to me one of the subtlest & most interesting studies of it that I have read. No doubt you have praised it too highly - of that an author cannot judge - but to be praised for the qualities one had wished to possess is a great pleasure & a rare one. I am particularly interested that a French critic should be so sympathetic; my faults are those, I should have said, that your race most abominates' .
