LANDSEER EDWIN: (1802-1873) English painter and sculptor. A.L.S., E Landseer, three pages, 8vo, The Club [London], 17th December 1863, to Sir Martin, on the blind embossed stationery of The Athenaeum. Landseer states that at 2 o'clock each day he goes to his clay studio on Fulham Road, explaining 'Yesterday I remained at work there till past 6 o'c and…..I drove to my caster and did not get either of your obliging notes till 11 o'c night when I returned to my home' and further adding 'Today after working at my model I walked off to Gt. George St. Westminster in obedience to your note appointing me there between 5 and 6 o'c. I was there at a quarter before 6 sharp. I write these details in case I don't find you at home this eve. If you can give my 5 minutes I am waiting at your door'. VG

Great George Street in Westminster, London, has housed the headquarters of the Institution of Civil Engineers since 1839 and, at the time of Landseer's letter, was also the location of the National Portrait Gallery.
