CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) French artist. A large, signed colour 9 x 13 plate, most likely removed from a book, being a reproduction illustration of Chagall's gouache, watercolour, brush and black ink work entitled La Queue des Sirenes (1945), signed ('Marc Chagall') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower mount and dated at Vence, 1950, in his hand. Some light creasing and a couple of minor stains to the mount, only very slightly affecting Chagall's signature, G
La Queue des Sirenes was executed by Chagall in the last months of 1945, at the end of his American exile. One of a series of gouaches, described as being 'among the most marvellous works' that Chagall produced in America, they illustrate the classic of medieval Arabic literature, The 1001 Nights, and form the basis for the lithographs commissioned by the publisher Kurt Wolff, Chagall's first important book with original prints to be published since the 1920s.
