MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A.L.S., Montgomery of Alamein, one page, 4to, Chateau de Courance, Milly, Seine-et-Oise, France, 26th October 1954, to Jeffrey Hernu ('My dear Jeffrey'). Montgomery explains that he has just returned from his second visit to Egypt in as many weeks, remarking 'This time I went to unveil the Alamein Memorial'. The Field Marshal further adds that he won't be in England or France on the dates provided by his correspondent, explaining 'I leave for Canada and the U.S.A. on 9th November and will not be back till the middle of November'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Montgomery. VG Jeffrey Hernu (1932-2007) British Major who served as ADC to Montgomery when he was NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe 1951-58.
