DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. A.L.S., Daphne, three pages, 8vo, Readymoney Cove, Fowey, [Cornwall], 7th April 1943, to Victor Gollancz ('Dear V. G.'). Writing during the height of World War II, Du Maurier announces 'Of course I understand about the printing difficulties, and I will not say a word to anyone about it' and further continues 'I somehow can't believe the demand will exceed your figure, because, being a stolid leisurely sort of book, it may not be everyone's money', also commenting 'I knew you had been far to (sic) busy to read Hungry Hill or anything else, and I only hope that you succeed in moving the authorities before very long. I am sure you have powerful backing in the county, by most of the right people, but the machinery is so heartbreakingly slow. And there is an undercurrent of anti-Semitism that needs watching'. In concluding Du Maurier asks whether she could receive six advance copies, and a further three to be paid for, in time for Easter. A letter of good content and association. A couple of small pinholes and a very minor rust stain to the upper left corner and a few small red indelible pencil annotations, VG Victor Gollancz (1893-1967) British publisher whose firm published Du Maurier's seventh novel, Hungry Hill, in 1943.
