DARBOY GEORGES: (1813-1871) French Catholic Priest. Archbishop of Paris 1863-71, and former Bishop of Nancy. Executed by shooting. Darboy was among a group of prominent hostages executed as the Paris Commune was about to be overthrown. A fine A.L.S., `G. Archev[eque] de Paris´(''G. Archbishop of Paris''), 0ne page, 4to, Rome, 13th February 1870, to a Monseigneur, in French. The letter, bearing to the upper left corner the printed heading ''Archbishop of Paris'', is cleanly written by Darboy, and referring to the situation in France states `New information received force me to beg Your Eminence, in the name of the French, to kindly accept to receive the international commission, today Sunday evening, at 5h exactly. It is about listening to each other and reaching an agreement considering what it is said will happen tomorrow. I have convoked as a matter of urgency the members of the Commission.´ A letter of interesting content. VG The present letter was written by Darboy in Rome, while he was attending the First Vatican Council 1869-70, convoked by Pope Pius IX, and which took place at the Vatican Basilica, unlike the five earlier councils from 1123 the first to 1512 the fifth, which met in the Lateran Basilica. The main decision taken was the Papal Infallibility.
