Crawford to Gable –

‘How am I doin? I think youre swell’

CRAWFORD JOAN: (1905-1977) American Actress, Academy Award winner. An exceptional, early vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11 x 14 photograph of the young Crawford seated in a seductive three-quarter length pose. Photograph by George Hurrell and bearing his blindstamp to the lower border. Signed by Crawford in bold black fountain pen ink with an inscription to Clark Gable, 'Clarke, How am I doin? I think youre swell, as ever, Joan'. A fabulous association piece, and as such quite rare and desirable. A few very light, extremely minor corner creases, otherwise VG Clark Gable (1901-1960) American actor, Academy Award winner. Gable starred alongside Joan Crawford in a total of eight films. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cast Crawford in five films in 1931, three of which teamed her opposite Gable, who would soon become the studio's biggest male star and 'King of Hollywood'. The first of the trio of movies was Dance, Fools, Dance, released in February 1931, followed by Laughing Sinners, released in May 1931 and, finally, the film Possessed, which was released in October 1931. All three were immensely popular with audiences and were generally well received by critics, cementing Crawford's position as one of M-G-M's top female stars of the decade. Provenance: Acquired by the present vendor at Christie's Entertainment Memorabilia sale in New York on 25th July 2003 (lot 72).
