An interesting T.L.S., von Bulow-Schwante, three pages, 4to, Berlin, 24th August 1937, to Otto Meissner, on the printed stationery of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Protocol Department, in German. Bulow-Schwante announces 'The bid American industrialist, Charles E. Bedaux, who is staying in Reichenhall currently for some months, has approached Fraulein Sigrid von Laffert, whom he knows, with a request to arrange an audience with the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor for him. Mr. Bedaux has based his request for this audience on the grounds that he holds a patent which makes possible a better use of hemp than hitherto; he is ready to sell the patent to Germany' and continues to provide Meissner with some background information regarding Bedaux, including his association with the Duke of Windsor, 'Bedaux is French by birth and became a naturalised citizen of the USA in 1909. He is a very successful financier, with large means, the owner of the chateau at Cande, well known from the Duke of Windsor's stay there, and famous as the promoter of projects full of new ideas. Mr. Bedaux is a determined opponent of Bolshevism, which he regards as the worst danger for the world's economic system…..Bedaux counts as a great friend of Germany…..he is well-known in German industry, particularly in the sphere of films, has links with the office of Ribbentrop, the ambassador, and has on occasion made contact with Schacht, the Reich Bank's chairman'. Bulow-Schwante proceeds to offer his own opinion on Bedaux's request, commenting 'On objective and personal grounds, there are no reservations to be expressed about Bedaux's request to be granted an audience with the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. But, in the view of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his wish to sell his patent to Germany can hardly be regarded as an adequate reason to seek an audience for him with the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. A relevant point here is that Herr von Stauss, a state counsellor, who knows Bedaux well, has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Bedaux has presented the patent to him…..The patent is intended to make possible the use of hemp in the manufacture of a substitute for gun-cotton. Herr von Stauss has offered……to speak to Bedaux about his request, and to advise him to defer it until his study of the German language, which he is pursuing enthusiastically, has advanced sufficiently far for him to be able to carry on a conversation in German.' With an A.N.S. by Otto Meissner (1880-1953, German civil servant, Chief of the Presidential Chancellery 1920-45) at the head, signed with his initial ('M'), stating 'So far, am entirely in agreement with the attitude of the Min. of F.A.; in addition, the Fuhrer receives people in between times at the Party Rally'.
