[PRIESTLEY JOSEPH]: (1733-1804) English Theologian, Natural Philosopher & Chemist, credited with the discovery of Oxygen. An unusual A.L., possibly unsigned, in an unidentified hand, one page, 8vo, n.p., 18th January 1767. The letter is dated and annotated at the head `Rev.d Dr Priestley at Warrington in Lancashire´, and the untranscribed text is in a form of shorthand which predates that of Isaac Pitman. Very small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. Few very small stains. G
Priestley was tutor of modern languages and rhetoric at Warrington Academy from 1761-67.
