VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. A very fine A.L.S., `G. Verdi

VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. A very fine A.L.S., `G. Verdi´, one page, to a 4.5 x 3.5 card, Sant´ Agata, Villanova sull´Arda, 10th September 1888, to Giulio Ricordi, in Italian. Verdi sends his close condolences to his correspondent, his publisher Giulio Ricordi, expressing his condolences on the death of Ricordi´s father, Tito Ricordi, reminding him that all things come to an end `…Tutto finisce mio caro Giulio!..´. Verdi further admits that there are no adequate words to give comfort for such a painful loss, but this time courage and work, of which he will have plenty, will bring him relief `…Il tempo ed il lavoro, e voi ne avete tanto, vi daranno conforto e sollievo!..´, and concludes with `Coraggio ed addio..´ (''Courage and farewell''). To a post-scriptum at the base of the card Verdi conveys the sympathies of his wife Giuseppina and forwards her condolences to Giulio´s mother. Accompanied by the original envelope, addressed in Verdi´s hand, postmarked in Busseto. VG

Giulio Ricordi (1840-1912) Italian Editor and Musician. Giulio joined in 1863 his family music publishing house Casa Ricordi, which was run until the death of his father Tito Ricordi in 1888 as the present letter states, and became from then on the head of the company until his death. Despite Verdi´s assurances, Giulio Ricordi found little peace, being soon embroiled in family squabbles following his father´s death.
