ROLLAND ROMAIN: (1866-1944) French Dramatist & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1915. A very interesting A.L.S., Romain Rolland, three pages, 8vo, Villeneuve, 24th November 1925, to C. Greenway, in French. Rolland thanks his correspondent for his touching letter and states in part `I have always been supported by my dear mum, deeply Christian, on my opposition to war. She died in 1919. But we had against us all Catholics and all Protestants, more nationalists than Christians. The official clergy, mostly, has been awful.´ further saying `One of my friends, a father whose only son was killed during the war, a devoted Catholic, Gustave Dupin, has published several painful and outraged works, withering denial: "La Guerre Infernal" (The Infernal War), - "Le Règne de la Bête" (The Beast Reign). He is a generous heart and a Christian thinker and a literate in religious history.´ Rolland concludes referring to a photograph he encloses, no longer present, saying `A photograph taken the same year that I was writing "Au dessus de la Mêlée" A good content letter reporting Rolland´s opinion on the Catholic Church attitude during WWI.
