[ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA]: (1872-1918) Empress Consort of Russia, spouse of Tsar Nicholas II. The Empress engaged in a notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. Assassinated. A good vintage unsigned cabinet photograph by Carl Backofen of Darmstadt, the albumen print featuring a vignette head and shoulders study of the young Princess Alix of Hesse in February 1887 wearing a fancy dress representing the period of the Thirty Years' War. Photographer's imprint to the lower mount and verso. Some mottling to the image, otherwise VG Carl Backofen (1853-1909) German Photographer.
