MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A.L.S., Montgomery of Alamein, one page, 8vo, Versailles, France, 18th November 1957, to Captain Jeffrey Hernu (‘My dear Jeffrey’), on Montgomery’s personal printed stationery from the Trianon Palace. Montgomery thanks his correspondent for their birthday greetings and continues to remark ‘I expect you will be glad to get back to the U.K. after so many years’ overseas’. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Montgomery and, interestingly, postmarked 19th November 1956, indicating that Montgomery apparently mis-dated his letter by a year. VG
