[DE BEAUHARNAIS JOSEPHINE]: (1763-1814) Empress Consort of the French 1804-10, the first wife of Nap... - [DE BEAUHARNAIS JOSEPHINE]: (1763-1814) Empress Consort of the French 1804-10, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. An attractive 4 x 5 piece of embroidered silk brocade, apparently originally part of Josephine's wedding dress, with a beautifully worked flower in various colours including pink, gold and silver, lightly window mounted within a stiff 4to card mount bearing the caption 'Silk Brocade worn by Josephine, Wife of Napolean (sic) I' and the address of Camden House, Chislehurst, Kent to the lower right corner. Accompanied by a typed note of provenance, headed Napoleon (Josephine) Wedding Dress and stating, in part, 'Embroidered silk brocade, 4'' x 5'', worn by Josephine……It was formerly the property of William Redmore Bigg, R.A…….and it came from Campden (sic) House……'. Some light age wear, otherwise VG William Redmore Bigg (1755-1828) British Painter. Camden Place, a large country house in Chislehurst, Kent, became the home of Emperor Napoleon III of France, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, after his exile from France in 1871 to join his wife, Empress Eugenie, and their son, the Prince Imperial, who had arrived the year before. The village of Chislehurst became the site of the French Court in exile.
