An excellent content L.S., ` Le M [aréch] al Duc D´Albufera´, with two holograph lines, two pages, folio, neatly inlaid to a page removed from an album, Barcelona, 5 th December 1813, to His Majesty Napoleon I, in French. A very cleanly written letter with interesting content related to exchange of prisonners, stating in part ` Sire, the squadron chief Anthoine, my aide-de-camp, was instructed by His Excellence the Minister of war, on 1 st of July, to forward to me to Valence the reports which made me learn about the disaster of Vitoria… after a strong resistance and after having 5 men killed and few wounded, he was made prisoner by 400 cavalry men; I claimed an exchange to Mina who requested that a nephew of lord Wellington had to be released; Your Majesty consented such exchange, but learned too late and after receiving a letter from lord Wellington that he had no nephew and that I had been cheated.´, Suchet further refers to information he has received, saying ` I have been informed that lord Wellington requested explanations to Mina, after which lord Wellington wrote to me saying that only Mina could free my aide-de-camp.´ Suchet further again explains to the Emperor the new conditions of Spanish General Mina, demanding the release of a prisoner, plus the permission to return to their own cities a number of persons, including women, and asking Napoleon to approve the new exchange ` I ask with insistence to Your Majesty to grant this favour to me and permit that His Excellence the Minister of war sends the orders regarding this exchange…´ VG Napoleon I (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815.
