BROOKE JAMES: (1803-1868) British Soldier & Adventurer who ruled as the first White Rajah of Sarawak 1841-68. A.L.S., J Brooke, three pages, 8vo, U.S.C., 4th June 1852, to Dr. Hawkins. Brooke states that he wishes he could confirm a visit to his correspondent during a commemoration 'but unfortunately I am a principal witness in a trial on the Queen's Bench' and therefore hopes that Hawkins 'will make your arrangements without reference to my coming and should this affair come off sufficiently early I will run down on the chance of finding a lodging'. Brooke concludes that he has been very busy lately with legal business as he ascertains the proper sequence of an individual's accusations. Together with Charles Brooke (1829-1917) Second White Rajah of Sarawak 1868-1917, nephew of James Brooke. Ink signature ('C Brooke') and several additional words in his hand on a piece clipped from the conclusion of a letter, with a few lines of partial text to the recto relating to the pattern for a uniform which can be found with the tailors Messrs.
