SPURGEON CHARLES H.: (1834-1892) British Baptist Preacher. A.L.S., C. H. Spurgeon, three pages, 8vo, Clapham, 15th May 1874, to a gentleman. Spurgeon apologises for not having been able to give due consideration to his correspondent's application earlier and continues 'I am sorry to say that I do not think I can supply your lack. We have few if any men fit to go out at present. There is so quick a demand that I cannot keep the brethren so long as I could wish. I find also a general dislike among young men to become co-pastors, though I do not think that such dislike is at all wise. I will give your note to Mr. Rogers Hake counsel with him but my own impression is that we shall not be able to find the kind of brother you indicate & that you will succeed better elsewhere', further adding 'I will send you a brother to take next Sabbath but not with the idea that he will be a candidate. I am sad Mr. Gillson is so feeble, you will be long in finding his like. May you be divinely guided'. A few minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG
