STANLEY HENRY M: (1841-1904) British Journalist and Explorer. A brief A.L.S., Henry M Stanley, one page, 8vo, Richmond Terrace, Whitehall, 21st July 1893, to E[dward] Marston. Stanley forwards 'another story (no longer present) to be added to the collection' and adds that it is entitled The City of the Elephants. With blank integral leaf. Together with Dorothy Tennant (1855-1926) English Painter, wife of Henry M. Stanley. A charming A.L.S., Dorothy Tennant, two pages, 8vo, Richmond Terrace, Whitehall, 2nd July 1890, to Miss. Balfour. Tennant informs her correspondent that her sister, Mrs. Myers, is staying at Hunstanton and will not return until a day or two before the wedding, further writing 'Will you come to my wedding at Westminster Abbey? And afterward to our home. My mother is going to receive her friends in the garden. I send you two tickets (no longer present) one for a friend. I think Mr. Balfour has had a stall ticket sent to him'. Some light overall age wear and staining, particularly evident to Tennant's letter. About G to VG, 2 Edward Marston was a partner in the British publishing house of Sampson Low, Marston & Company who published Henry M. Stanley's collection of nineteen stories from Africa under the title My Dark Companions and Their Strange Stories in 1893. The sister to whom Dorothy Tennant refers to in her letter was Eveleen Tennant Myers (1856-1937) English Photographer who also posed for the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais.
