A ROMAN BRONZE LAMP IN THE FORM OF A FOOT, CA. 100 BC - 100 AD

A bronze lamp in the form of a right foot wearing a single strap sandal. Possibly of Roman design. The foot was perceived as a symbol of good health and healing, especially by the early Christians. Oil would be poured into the reservoir of the foot while a wick, placed in the holder protruding from the toes, would be soaked in the oil allowing a flame to be maintained. A rounded handle on the ankle of the foot allowed for the lamp to be easily carried. This item is missing its oil lid where the oil would be poured and sealed.

Ancient Rome - CA. 100 BC - 100 AD

L: 5 1/4 in., (13.3 cm.)

Condition: Good condition overall. Signs of oxidation and general wear. Hole on the top ridge of the foot. Missing oil lid.
