A LATVIAN 1922 LIBERATION WAR COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL

A Latvian 1922 Liberation War commemorative shield-shaped silvered metal and red enamel medal. On the obverse: an arm holding a sword and three gilt stars of Latvia, laurel and oak branches to left and right, inscribed above For the Fatherland in Latvian and dated 1918 to 1920. The reverse is plain, unmarked. Suspended from an original striped red, white, and red ribbon. The medal was instituted on May 2, 1922, and was awarded to participants in the War of Independence 1918-1920. The cross that appears on the hilt of the sword on this medal is used as a symbol of good luck and has no connection to the swastika used by Nazi Germany.

Dimensions: L: 3 9/16 in., (9 cm.)

Condition: Very good, suspension ring broken between medal and ribbon
